When Women Talk About Fat, Muscle, and “Goals”: Listening Beyond the Numbers

By Dr. Anita Khokhar

A few mornings ago, I overheard a group of women chatting after their fitness session. One of them, visibly pleased, said, “My body fat has gone down, muscle mass has gone up… but I’m still far from my goal.” The others nodded knowingly.

That single sentence — “far from my goal” — lingered with me long after I left.

As a doctor, I’ve often heard women describe their health in terms of what’s lacking: the kilos yet to lose, the firmness yet to achieve, the stamina yet to build. Even when they’ve made remarkable progress — reversing health markers, becoming stronger, feeling more confident — they hesitate to celebrate themselves because that elusive “goal” still feels distant.

But here’s something I’ve learned through years of working with women — health is never just about numbers. It’s about balance, resilience, and a relationship with one’s own body.

In India, our conversations around women’s health are slowly changing. More women are taking charge, understanding fitness and nutrition, learning to read their bodies’ signals. Yet the old voices linger — comparing, doubting, chasing perfection.

I often tell women in my awareness sessions: “Progress is health. Perfection is a myth.”
If your body fat has gone down, your muscle mass has gone up, and you feel stronger — you are already on the right path. Every small step matters. Every drop of sweat is an act of self-respect.

What I wish for is a collective shift — from focusing on appearance to focusing on well-being. From “how I look” to “how I live.”

So today, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to women across India — from every walk of life — to talk about their journeys. Not just the “before and after,” but the during — the days of effort, the quiet victories, the internal shifts.

💬 Tell me — what has changed for you?
Is it the way you eat, sleep, move, or simply think about your health? What’s your “why”?

Let’s start listening to each other more deeply. Let’s build a community where women speak not just about calories and kilograms, but about confidence, calm, courage, and continuity.

Because when we listen to women talk about their bodies — really listen — we don’t just hear fitness stories.
We hear stories of strengthhealing, and becoming whole again.
